How To Grind Your Dog's Nails Properly And Safe With LuckyTail? (1)
LuckyTail - innovative and safe for your dog nail grinder

As responsive dog owners, we all know how important it is to trim our dogs’ nails. However, many still have doubts about the best way to shorten their claws with a nail grinder. This article will explain how to properly use LuckyTail Nail Grinder, and give you some tricks to ensure a pleasant experience for both you and your pooch.

The device

Lucky Tail is an electric cylinder-shaped nail grinder with a high-quality grinding head on top covered by a safety cap, which protects your pooch’s nails from overcutting. The device is portable and USB rechargeable, allowing you to use it anywhere. In addition, Lucky Tail comes with two speeds that you can adjust according to your pooch’s nail thickness and tolerance.

The grinder is easy, safe, and intuitive to use, however, at first glance, it can be a bit intimidating for both you and your pet if you don’t follow the right instructions.

Before grinding

As a first experience, let your dog feel comfortable around the device. Show him the nail grinder and let him get close, touch and sniff it. After a few minutes, turn on the device and let him get used to the sound, then gently touch his feet so he can also feel the slight vibration of the equipment.

Once your pet is comfortable with Lucky Tail, make sure to get his paw hair out of the way, if your dog has long fur, cut it short or bend it back, so there’s no chance of getting caught by the grinder’s spinning tip.

It’s important to make sure your pet is comfortable by the time you start grinding his claws, so give him some treats and cuddles. This will make your dog feel safe and help him to associate Lucky Tail with a pleasant moment.

Steps for Grinding the Nails with LuckyTail

First of all, make sure the safety cap is covering the grinding bit. Turn the grinder on at low speed, tilt the device at a 45-degree angle and gently start grinding the top of the nail from the inner curve, slowly bringing it down.

Focusing on one nail at a time, burst the nails in short sequences of maximum 5 seconds. Add some short breaks in between to avoid overheating your pooch’s nails. If your dog has thick nails, you can also try increasing the speed for a fast process.

Once you remove the sharp tip, touch the nails again in a circular motion around the tip to polish and smooth. This is the time you’ll also define the shape of your dog’s claws.

After you finish, or when you feel your pooch needs a break, reward him with cuddles and treats. It’s the best way to get him to associate Lucky Tail with something he loves.

Careful with the quick!

Each dog’s nail has a vascularized and innervated part called “quick”. Cutting them off causes bleeding, pain, and maybe even infections. You should spot the quick first and be careful to stop grinding before it comes too close. The ideal distance from the quick is about 0.08 inches.

Spotting the quick can be easy if your pet has light-colored nails: it’s the reddish part of the nail. On the other hand, if your pooch’s claws are black, you’ll have to look from the bottom of the nail and find the little black core inside the nail. As you grind, you’ll be able to better see it and stop the pawdicure before it comes too close.

How often should I grind?

It’s recommended to grind your dog’s nails once every two weeks, or when you notice his nails are almost touching the floor. If you have a small puppy, start his nail care as soon as possible so he can get used to the process.

Check also the grinder’s head efficiency. Usually, you can replace them after a few months of use, depending on the frequency and thickness of your dog’s nails.
